A fifth-generation model shifted to front-wheel drive for 1983 as a four-door sedan and hardtop (with different styling). This formed the basis of the widened Mitsubishi Magna in Australia for 1985, the same year in which Mitsubishi won Bild am Sonntag's Das Goldene Lenkrad (Golden Steering Wheel) award in Germany for the Galant and Wheels’ Car of the Year for the Magna.[5] This generation was also sold in the United States and New Zealand as the Mitsubishi Sigma until 1990.

Export trim levels were often engine-specific, depending on the market: GL models were offered with either 1.6L or 1.8L engines, GLS models (GLX on certain markets) had 2.0-litre engines (badged 2000 GLS) and Diesel versions had a 1.8-litre turbodiesel engine. The diesel model did not have a trim level, it was simply 1800 TD.

Mitsubishi's fourth iteration of the Galant/Sigma debuted many new innovations for Mitsubishi. Their new 'Sirius' engine was offered in turbocharged form for performance enthusiasts, while for economy, an 'Astron' 4D55, the first diesel engine in a Japanese passenger car, was also available. A new electronic fuel injection system was introduced on some models of the gasoline Astron, while only the carburetted version was offered in the United States.

For the second generation in a row Mitsubishi could claim to be building an award-winning car, as this was chosen as Car of the Year in New Zealand in 1981.

From 1982 to 1983, some of the Australian Sigmas were exported to the United Kingdom with the Lonsdale badge, circumventing the voluntary import quota restrictions adopted by Japanese manufacturers. However the car was unsuccessful, and for 1983 and 1984 it carried Mitsubishi Sigma badges in the UK before imports were discontinued.

The wagon version was facelifted, although from firewall back the vehicle remained the same. Production of the wagon version continued in Australia until 1987 when it was replaced by the new Magna.

The two door coupé was also redesigned for 1981 and was sold through 1983. The fourth generation was known as the Mitsubishi Scorpion in Australia, and the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Sapporo in the United States.

The fourth generation sedan and coupé were both slightly larger than the third generation cars. Additional emphasis was given to ergonomics, aerodynamics, and safety. Shoulder room, leg room, and head space were all increased, and the trunk was slightly enlarged for more luggage capacity. The interior was made quieter with additional carpeting and other acoustic dampening materials and a double-thickness front bulkhead.

The third-generation of the car was introduced in 1976, and was known in Japan as the Galant Λ (Lambda) two door coupé, or the Galant Σ (Sigma) four door sedan. In many export markets the Sigma was simply known as the Galant, while the Dodge Colt name continued in America. A wagon variant was available to complement the sedan. In Australia, where the car was built locally at Chrysler's Clovelly Park plant, it was known as the Chrysler Sigma.

The new coupé (Galant Λ) was sold in Australia as the Chrysler Scorpion. In the United States, it was sold as the Dodge Challenger and the Plymouth Sapporo, beginning in 1978. A turbocharged version of the coupé was called the Galant 2000 GSR and was intended to replace the Galant GTO.

Mitsubishi introduced the MCA-Jet engine with its latest Galant. This incorporated the "Jet Valve", a secondary intake valve which improved emissions without necessitating the need for a completely redesigned cylinder head.

The third generation Galant was the recipient of the Car of the Year award in South Africa in 1977.[4]

The second generation Galant was more widely exported as Mitsubishi's ambitions grew. It was again sold by Chrysler in many different guises; as the Dodge Colt in the United States, as the Plymouth Colt and Plymouth Cricket in Canada (from 1974),[3] as the Chrysler Valiant Galant in Australia, and in Europe as the Colt Galant.

This model was more curvaceous, influenced by contemporary "coke-bottle" styling, and featured a range of larger 'Astron' engines developing up to 125 PS to complement the 'Saturn' units. During the second generation, the first Astron 80 engines were introduced using Mitsubishi's newly developed "Silent Shaft" balance shaft technology for reduced vibration and noise.

The first generation of the car, initially known as the Colt Galant, was released in December 1969. Three models were available, powered by the new 'Saturn' engine in 1.3 (AI model) or 1.5 L (AII and AIII) configurations. The design was dubbed "Dynawedge" by Mitsubishi, referring to the influence of aerodynamics on the silhouette.[2] Initially only available as a four-door, a two-door hardtop variant was added in 1970, offering the unique stylistic feature of being the first Japanese production passenger car with full side windows and no side pillars. It became Mitsubishi's first car to be sold in the United States in 1971 when the Chrysler Corporation, the company's new partner and stakeholder, began importing the car as the Dodge Colt.

From 1970, a fastback coupé model was developed, the Galant GTO. Fashioned after contemporary American muscle cars, the hardtop GTO was available with a choice of three 4G32 'Saturn' engines, and was available until 1975. The nameplate was sufficiently highly regarded in Japan for it to be resurrected for the 1990 Mitsubishi GTO coupé.

A second coupé was introduced in 1971, the Galant FTO. Powered by the 4G41 1.4 L engine, it too would leave a legacy for the company to return to in the 1990s with the Mitsubishi FTO.

Initial production was based only in Japan, but since 1994 the American market has been served by vehicles assembled at the former Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) facility in Normal, Illinois.

The Mitsubishi Raider is a pickup truck from Mitsubishi Motors that debuted in the fall of 2005 as a 2006 model for the United States market and is based largely on the Dodge Dakota. The name is recycled from the Dodge Raider SUV sold from 1987 to 1990, which was a rebadged Mitsubishi Montero.

The Raider filled the gap in the Mitsubishi lineup since the discontinuation of the Mighty Max in 1996. The Raider is built in the United States by Chrysler. Engine choices had included a 4.7 L PowerTech V8 making 230 hp and 290 lb·ft (393 N·m) and a 3.7 L PowerTech V6 which produced 210 hp and 210 lb·ft (285 N·m), though by the 2008 model year, only the 3.7 L V6 was available.

377 and 492 units were sold in January and February 2006 respectively, compared to 4,583 and 6,260 Dakotas. Mitsubishi dealers reportedly had a six-month supply of Raiders on their lots, and the company asked DaimlerChrysler to cut production.[1] 9,861 Raiders were built in 2005, and just 297 more were built from the first of the year through March 11, 2006.[2] Approximately 8,200 Raiders were sold in 2007.[3] The Raider is not currently available in Canada, where the brand has only sold since roughly 2003. However, some dealers in the country are currently selling exported Raiders from the United States.

Recently a concept truck was rebadged as the Street Raider and designed by Mitsubishi's California design studio. It first appeared at the 2005 SEMA automotive show and since then has been shown at various automotive shows around the United States. It includes 22 inch custom wheels, custom dual exhaust, and a lowered stance among other features not found on a stock Raider. The Street Raider carries a mooted price tag of $60,000, although there are no current plans to sell it.[4]

New Mitsubishi Colt – nice and easy drive

The new Mitsubishi Colt next generation 3-and 5-door models have been designed to bring even more style, practicality and performance to this fiercely competitive supermini sector.

The latest figures for the new Mitsubishi Colt show that the CZ1 and CZ2 3-door variants have a predicted residual value of 75% of their new value after 12-months/10,000 miles and 41% after 3-years/60,000 miles.

The 5-door meanwhile is not far behind with 74% and 40% residual values predicted over the same 1-year and 3-year periods.

Outside its more ‘traditional’ competition the new Mitsubishi Colt beats the Ferrari 430 Coupe, Jaguar XF Luxury Saloon and Maserati Quattroporte – retaining up to 22% more of its new value.

The previous generation Colt’s sales success was built on a responsible sales strategy that refused to cave-in to distress selling or big discount fleet and retail deals.

In 2007 a healthy 8,698 new Colts were sold, proving that stock management is key to alleviating stress on used market values.

Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi’s director of dales and marketing, said: “We are really pleased with these residual values.

“They underline the strong value of this car both as a new-car proposition and as a used car for the future.

“It’s also a great reward for the way we have responsibly sold the Colt since its relaunch in mid-2004.

“Beating a Ferrari, Maserati and Jaguar is, of course, a bit of fun but the serious message is that we are top of the pile with all our main competition in the B-segment.”

Starting at just £7,749[2], the next generation new Mitsubishi Colt is on sale now with Mitsubishi dealers across the UK.

A new 150bhp ‘hot hatch’ Ralliart version is due in the UK early next year promptly followed by a range of low CO2 emission variants, badged ‘ClearTec’, with emission levels starting at 115gkm as announced at the Paris Show.

New Mitusbishi L200 now with Walkinshaw Performance

The new Mitsubishi L200 will now be available with Walkinshaw Performance. Tom Walkinshaw began his motorsports career in 1968 and then formed Tom Walkinshaw Racing in 1975.

Now with over 30 years’ experience in performance engineering, they have turned their expertise on the special edition new Mitsubishi L200 double cab pick-up.

The new Mitsubishi L200 Walkinshaw Performance will benefit from, besides other standard equipment, a 20 inch ‘Equinox’ alloy wheels and tyres, Walkinshaw Performance leather seats, Walkinshaw Performance decal stickers, 168PS Rallitronic power upgrade, DVD satellite navigation system with 7 inch screen, cruise control, ‘Mitsubishi Power’ sound system (420 watts), Bluetooth connectivity,CD Auto-changer, and stainless steel fuel filler cap, tailgate cover and door handle covers.

In addition, customers buying new Mitsubishi’s L200 ‘Walkinshaw Performance’ can opt for enhanced ride, handling and performance courtesy of a ‘Walkinshaw Performance’ sports suspension and exhaust upgrade kit.

The new Mitsubishi L200 Walkinshaw Performance will be available in Starlight Silver, Cosmos Black, Graphite Grey, Aztec Red and Sapphire Blue, with metallic and pearlescent paint as an additional option.

Pricing will range from £21,499.00 (CV List Price) for the L200 2.5 DI-D Walkinshaw Performance Double Cab Manual (excluding the Ralliart power upgrade) to £22,799.00 for the L200 2.5 DI-D Walkinshaw Performance Double Cab Automatic (including Rallitronic power upgrade).

The post-registration sports suspension and exhaust upgrade kit is available from the Walkinshaw Performance Group for £2,595 plus VAT.

The Walkinshaw Performance sports suspension and exhaust upgrade has already been winning awards, including the 2008 4x4 and MPV Driver Innovation of the Year Award.

The post-registration upgrade compromises none of the new Mitsubishi’s L200’s award winning off road capabilities or load capacity status, meaning the L200 Walkinshaw Performance is still a practical work horse, as well as a performance SUV with outstanding ride and handling characteristics.

New Mitsubishi Outlander

31 Mar 2008 - New Mitsubishi Outlander first SUV to have Twin Clutch SST

The New Mitsubishi Outlander will now seamlessly step up a gear with the introduction of the Lancer Evolution X’s Twin Clutch SST.

As exemplified in the Lancer Evolution X, the Twin Clutch SST’s benefits include lightning quick shifting versus normal manual transmissions, almost no power loss when shifting versus traditional automatic transmissions, and lower fuel consumption & emissions versus automatics due to the inherent efficiency of the system’s gear changes.

The New Mitsubishi Outlander will be the first SUV to be equipped with cutting-edge twin clutch technology and will certainly add to Outlander’s excellent driving dynamics.

The latest innovation comes from Mitsubishi’s ‘Project Global’ architecture and helps to further validate the decision to roll out this technology beyond the legendary Lancer Evolution X hero model.

Further specification details are still to be announced, but the New Mitsubishi Outlander’s UK models will come complete with paddle shifters, dual mode (Normal/Sport) and Hill Start Assist functions.

MITSUBISHI GRANDIS

Comfort
Style
Handling
Depreciation
Economy
Average Rating
Green Label
Date Launched 01/07/2004

Advantages: Lots of equipment; comfortable ride; practical

Disadvantages: Uninspiring to drive

Summary: The Grandis makes a good package with impressive versatility; it's a shame it doesn't drive as well as it looks

The Grandis is a surprisingly versatile MPV, with seven seats and a clever mechanism to fold the third row into the floor using a simple lever. As well as looking good, the two engines (petrol and diesel) both pull well and remain quiet at cruising speeds, although they do make themselves known when stretched. The emphasis is on a smooth ride, which means that dynamic handling is not on the strong side; however the Mitsubishi copes well with parking manoeuvres thanks to its light steering. Equipment levels are particularly high - even base models are packed full of gadgets - so the Grandis offers excellent value for money; what's more, AutoeBid's reverse auction can generate some big discounts from Mitsubishi main dealers to make this stylish MPV a real steal.

New Mitsubishi Prototype-S

26 Feb 2008 - New Mitsubishi Prototype-S – true to type

The new Mitsubishi Prototype S is can trace it genealogy to the original 2005 Concept-Sportback.

Indeed, the prototype remains close to its original inspiration, and closely previews the forthcoming Lancer Sportback.

The new Mitsubishi Prototype S sports a variation of Lancer’s trademark “Jet Fighter” at the front. Other distinguishing features include a Lancer Evolution X style bonnet, Prototype-S specific headlamps and 19” five-spoke alloy wheels.

At the rear, the new Mitsubishi Prototype S follows the same design theme explored with Concept-Sportback with a very fast lift gate finished by Sportback’s trademark colour-keyed roof spoiler.

Its elongated rear combination lamps widen the stance of the car as they wrap around the rear wings.

The new Mitsubishi Prototype S interior displays a very continental flair with its twin-hood meters, the black suede finish of the upper dashboard & door panels and the light brown-coloured leather selected for its upholstery, in a mix of plain, perforated and weaved finish.

When launched later in the year, this 5-door hatchback variant of the new Lancer family will represent 80% of the forecasted Lancer volume in the UK.

The Mitsubishi Triton is a compact pickup truck produced by Mitsubishi Motors. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Forte in Japan from 1978 to 1986, when the name was discontinued in favour of the Strada. For most export markets the name L200 is used,[1][2][3] while Storm was used for Malaysia during the early 2000s. It was previously known as the Rodeo in South Africa until 2007.[4] Cumulative sales of the first three generations now exceed 2.8 million units around the world.[5]

In the United States two captive imports of the Forte were sold by the Chrysler Corporation from 1979, as the Dodge Ram 50 and Plymouth Arrow Truck. Mitsubishi itself imported it as the Mighty Max when it began selling directly in the U.S. from 1982, at which point the Plymouth ceased to be available.

The fourth generation Triton, built in Mitsubishi's subsidiary in Thailand and launched in 2005, was designed by Akinori Nakanishi and is exported to 140 global markets.
